What Is Stellest?

Highly Aspherical Lenslet Technology

Stellest was developed by Essilor following more than a decade of dedicated optical research into how peripheral defocus influences eye growth. Its H.A.L., Highly Aspherical Lenslet Target, design uses 11 concentric rings of tiny aspherical lenslets surrounding a clear central optical zone, creating a full volume of myopic defocus across the lens.

That continuous defocus signal is associated with slowing the underlying axial elongation responsible for progressing myopia, not simply correcting the blur it causes.

How The Concentric Ring Design Works

Eleven rings of tiny lenslets surround the clear centre, engineered from over a decade of optical research.

11 Concentric Rings

Aspherical lenslets arranged in rings around the clear central zone, delivering continuous myopic defocus.

Full Volume Of Defocus

The ring design covers more of the lens periphery than a segmented approach, for fuller coverage.

A Decade Of Research

Built on more than ten years of dedicated Essilor optical research into peripheral defocus.

Results Scale With Wear Time

Consistent full-time wear, at least 12 hours a day, is associated with the strongest results in trial data.

Rigorous Clinical Trial

The published two-year randomised trial remains one of the most cited in the myopia control field.

How It Works

Results That Scale With Wear Time

Stellest is designed to influence the underlying growth of the eye, and its effect is closely linked to how consistently it's worn.

1

A clear central zone corrects everyday vision

The middle of the lens works just like a standard single-vision lens, giving your child sharp, clear eyesight for reading, the whiteboard and everyday life.

2

Concentric lenslet rings surround it

Eleven rings of tiny aspherical lenslets create continuous myopic defocus across the lens periphery.

3

Consistent wear strengthens the effect

Trial data found children wearing the lenses at least 12 hours a day saw meaningfully stronger results than less consistent wearers.

In plain terms: a normal lens only helps your child see clearly today. Stellest aims to also change the trajectory of their eyesight, and wearing it consistently matters.
Benefits

Why Parents Choose Stellest

Well-evidenced results

An average 50% reduction in progression, rising to 60% with consistent wear.

Wide prescription range

Available across a broad range of myopic prescriptions.

Looks like normal glasses

The lenslet rings are subtle and not noticeable at typical viewing distance.

No drops, no daily insertion

A comfortable, needle-free, contact-lens-free option for children who prefer glasses.

Essilor's optical heritage

Built on more than a decade of dedicated peripheral defocus research.

Rewards consistent wear

Clear, measurable improvement in results the more consistently it's worn.

Our Clinic

How Eyecare Concepts Uses Stellest

We offer Stellest as a well-evidenced glasses option, and help every family build a wear routine that supports the strongest possible result.

Step 1

Comprehensive assessment

We assess your child's progressing myopia and establish a baseline axial length measurement.

Step 2

Precision fitting

We fit each lens for optimal alignment and confirm frame suitability for the full ring pattern.

Step 3

Ongoing monitoring

We review progress at regular intervals, tracking axial length, prescription change and wear consistency.

Stellest may be a great fit if your child:

  • Has diagnosed progressing myopia
  • Prefers glasses to contacts or OrthoK
  • Will wear glasses consistently, full-time
  • Needs a standard minus prescription lens

Common Questions

Stellest: FAQs

What is Stellest?
Stellest is a myopia control spectacle lens developed by Essilor, using Highly Aspherical Lenslet Target technology, known as H.A.L. It's one of the most widely studied myopia control glasses lenses available, developed following more than a decade of Essilor's optical research.
How does Stellest work?
The lens combines a clear central optical zone for normal distance vision with 11 concentric rings of aspherical lenslets across the rest of the lens. Together those rings create a continuous volume of myopic defocus surrounding the child's central vision, a signal associated with slowing axial elongation.
How effective is Stellest at slowing myopia?
Stellest's clinical trial found an average 50% reduction in myopia progression over two years compared with single-vision lenses, rising to around 60% in children who wore the lenses more consistently, generally at least 12 hours a day.
What's the difference between Stellest and Stellest 2.0?
Stellest 2.0 is Essilor's refined next-generation version of the same H.A.L. optical principle, and can be fitted in plano power, making it usable as a preventive option in at-risk, pre-myopic children. Original Stellest remains available and well-evidenced in standard minus prescriptions. We help families choose the right version.
Do Stellest lenses look different to ordinary glasses?
No, from typical viewing distance they look like standard prescription lenses. The lenslet rings are subtle and generally only noticeable on close inspection.
Does wear time affect how well Stellest works?
Yes, trial data shows a clear relationship between consistent daily wear and stronger myopia control effect, children wearing the lenses more hours per day saw meaningfully better results, which is why we encourage full-time wear.
How does Stellest compare with MiyoSMART?
Both are top-tier evidenced myopia control lenses with a similar defocus principle but different lens geometry, Stellest's concentric H.A.L. rings versus MiyoSMART's D.I.M.S. segments. Clinical results are broadly comparable, and the choice often comes down to prescription range, frame fit and personal preference.
Can Stellest be fitted into any frame?
Most standard frames work well, as long as there's sufficient lens area for the full ring pattern. We check frame suitability at your appointment.
Is Stellest suitable for a wide range of prescriptions?
Stellest is available across a broad prescription range, we confirm exact availability for your child's prescription at consultation.
How does Stellest compare with contact lenses or OrthoK?
It sits in the same top evidence tier as OrthoK and MiSight contact lenses, with the simplicity of everyday glasses wear and no lens handling required. Our Myopia Control Treatments page compares all five of our treatment options.
