A TGA-Approved Milestone For Australian Families

For years, Australian optometrists prescribing low-dose atropine for myopia control relied on compounding pharmacies to prepare it, since no commercially manufactured, TGA-approved product existed locally. Eikance, made by Aspen Pharmacare, changed that, becoming the first atropine eye drop specifically approved by the TGA in Australia for slowing myopia progression in children.

It's manufactured at a fixed 0.01% concentration, the same dose extensively studied in major international trials, produced under standardised commercial quality control rather than pharmacy-by-pharmacy compounding. See our Atropine Eye Drops page for how low-dose atropine works more broadly.

A Well-Studied, Consistent Dose

Eikance's 0.01% concentration is the same dose used in some of the largest atropine myopia control trials, including arms of the LAMP study, giving prescribers a well-characterised evidence base to draw on. At this lower end of the low-dose range, the myopia control effect is generally milder than higher concentrations, but side effects such as light sensitivity tend to be correspondingly mild too.

That balance makes Eikance a sensible starting point for many children, with the option to step up to a higher, compounded concentration later if progression continues at a faster rate than we'd like.

TGA Approval Matters

Being TGA-approved means Eikance has gone through Australia's formal regulatory assessment for quality, safety and manufacturing consistency specifically for this indication, an assurance that compounded formulations, while clinically useful and commonly prescribed, don't carry in the same regulatory form.

Who Eikance Suits

Eikance suits families who want a TGA-approved, commercially manufactured atropine option at a well-studied starting concentration, and children for whom 0.01% is an appropriate starting dose based on their progression rate and our optometrist's assessment.

It's one option within our broader atropine treatment category, itself one of our five treatment options. If a different concentration is needed, our compounded atropine page explains that alternative.

Common Questions

Eikance Atropine: FAQs

What is Eikance?
Eikance is a 0.01% low-dose atropine eye drop manufactured by Aspen Pharmacare, and was the first atropine product specifically TGA-approved in Australia for slowing myopia progression in children, rather than being repurposed or compounded from a higher-strength formulation.
How is Eikance different from compounded atropine?
Eikance is a commercially manufactured, TGA-registered product made at a fixed 0.01% concentration in a standardised, quality-controlled process. Compounded atropine is custom-prepared by a compounding pharmacy at whatever concentration your optometrist prescribes, offering more flexibility in dose but without the same standardised commercial manufacturing and TGA registration. We explain the compounded option on our dedicated page.
Why would we use Eikance instead of compounded atropine?
Eikance offers the reassurance of TGA approval and consistent commercial manufacturing at a fixed, well-studied 0.01% concentration, the dose used in major trials like LAMP. Some families and prescribers prefer that standardisation, while others need a different concentration only available through compounding.
How effective is 0.01% atropine for myopia control?
0.01% atropine sits at the lower end of the low-dose range studied in major trials. It generally has a milder effect than higher low-dose concentrations, but with correspondingly fewer side effects such as light sensitivity, a trade-off we discuss individually for each child.
What are the side effects of Eikance?
At 0.01%, side effects are generally mild and less pronounced than higher low-dose concentrations, occasional light sensitivity or slightly reduced near-focusing ability. We monitor every child regularly and can adjust the treatment approach if needed.
How is Eikance used?
As a single drop instilled each night before bed in the treated eye or eyes, fitting easily into an existing bedtime routine.
Is Eikance available at pharmacies in Australia?
As a TGA-approved product, Eikance is available through the normal pharmacy dispensing pathway with a prescription from our optometrist, without needing a compounding pharmacy.
Can Eikance be used long-term?
Long-term use is common in myopia control, since progression can continue over several years through childhood and adolescence. We review dose and duration regularly as part of ongoing myopia management.
What age is Eikance suitable for?
Eikance is used across the typical paediatric myopia control age range, we assess individual suitability at your child's consultation, considering progression rate and any relevant medical history.
How does Eikance fit into your five treatment options?
It's one form of atropine within our overall atropine treatment category, itself one of our five treatment options alongside OrthoK, contact lenses, myopia control glasses and RLRL. Our Atropine Eye Drops page explains the treatment more broadly.
