What Is MiyoSMART?

D.I.M.S. Technology, Everyday Glasses

MiyoSMART was developed by Hoya in collaboration with the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and was among the first myopia control spectacle lenses to bring genuinely strong clinical evidence into an everyday pair of glasses. Its D.I.M.S., Defocus Incorporated Multiple Segments, design surrounds a clear central optical zone with hundreds of small segments that create continuous myopic defocus.

That defocus signal appears to slow the underlying elongation of the eye responsible for progressing myopia, not just correct the blur it causes.

How The Segmented Lens Design Works

A clear centre and hundreds of surrounding segments work together, invisibly, in every pair of MiyoSMART glasses.

Clear Central Zone

Corrects distance vision exactly like a standard lens, keeping schoolwork and sport sharp.

Hundreds Of Micro-Segments

Small, non-visible segments ring the centre, each contributing to continuous myopic defocus.

A Decade Of Real-World Evidence

One of the longest-established myopia control lens platforms, worn by millions of children globally.

Looks Like Ordinary Glasses

The segment pattern is invisible from typical viewing distance, no odd rings or patterns.

100+ Published Studies

One of the most extensively researched myopia control spectacle lens platforms available.

How It Works

Slowing Eye Growth, Not Just Blurring Vision

MiyoSMART doesn't just correct your child's short-sightedness, it's designed to help slow the progression of their myopia.

D.I.M.S. Lens Diagram — Clear Zone & Defocus Segments
1

A clear central zone corrects everyday vision

The middle of the lens works just like a standard single-vision lens, giving your child sharp, clear eyesight for reading, the whiteboard and everyday life.

2

Hundreds of tiny segments surround it

Ringing the clear zone are hundreds of small defocus segments, each gently focusing light just in front of the retina rather than on it.

3

The signal continuously reaches the eye

That signal reaches the peripheral retina throughout waking hours, helping to reduce the excessive axial elongation that drives myopia progression.

In plain terms: a normal lens only helps your child see clearly today. MiyoSMART aims to also change the trajectory of their eyesight over time.

Common Questions

MiyoSMART: FAQs

What is MiyoSMART?
MiyoSMART is a myopia control spectacle lens developed by Hoya, using a technology called D.I.M.S., Defocus Incorporated Multiple Segments. It was one of the first myopia control lenses to bring strong clinical evidence into an everyday pair of glasses.
How does MiyoSMART work?
The lens has a clear central zone for normal distance vision, surrounded by hundreds of small, non-visible optical segments. Those segments create a second, out-of-focus image just in front of the retina at all times, a signal that appears to slow the eye's tendency to keep elongating.
How effective is MiyoSMART?
Clinical trials found MiyoSMART reduced myopia progression by around 60% on average compared with single-vision lenses over two years, with longer-term follow-up data showing the effect holds up over time. It's one of the most extensively published myopia control spectacle lenses available.
What's the difference between MiyoSMART and MiyoSMART iQ?
MiyoSMART iQ is the newer generation of the same D.I.M.S. optical principle, refined lens design and now also available in plus powers for use as a preventive option in pre-myopic, at-risk children. Original MiyoSMART remains a well-evidenced, widely available option in standard minus powers. We help families choose the right version based on prescription and availability.
Do MiyoSMART lenses look different to normal glasses?
No, from a normal viewing distance they look like standard prescription lenses. The optical segments are only visible on close inspection of the lens surface.
Does my child need to wear MiyoSMART glasses all the time?
Consistent wear during waking hours gives the best result, since the treatment effect depends on the eye continuously receiving the defocus signal from the lens.
How does MiyoSMART compare with Stellest?
Both are top-tier evidenced myopia control lenses using a similar defocus principle with different lens geometry, MiyoSMART's D.I.M.S. segments versus Stellest's H.A.L. concentric rings. Clinical results are broadly comparable, and we help families choose based on prescription, frame fit and personal preference.
Can MiyoSMART be fitted into any frame?
Most frames work well, provided there's enough usable lens area for the full optical zone. We check frame suitability at your appointment.
Is MiyoSMART suitable for high prescriptions?
MiyoSMART is available across a wide prescription range, we confirm exact availability for your child's specific prescription at consultation.
How does MiyoSMART compare with contact lenses or OrthoK?
It sits in the same top evidence tier as OrthoK and MiSight contact lenses, with the added simplicity of everyday glasses wear, no lens handling or overnight routine. Our Myopia Control Treatments page compares all five of our treatment options.
