Common Questions

Comprehensive Eye Examination FAQs

What's included in a comprehensive eye examination at Eyecare Concepts?
A full vision and prescription check, an ocular health assessment, intra-ocular pressure measurement, and OCT or wide-field retinal imaging where indicated — all included as standard, not offered as costly add-ons. See our eye care technology page for the full list of instruments we use at every visit.
How is this different from a basic eye test?
A basic eye test checks your prescription. A comprehensive exam goes much further — using OCT 3D retinal scans, Optos ultra-widefield imaging and corneal topography to look inside the eye and detect conditions like glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy years before symptoms would otherwise appear.
What is OCT imaging and why does it matter?
Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) takes a cross-sectional, high-resolution scan of your retina's individual layers, letting us see microscopic changes long before you'd notice anything was wrong. It's part of our standard comprehensive exam, not an optional extra.
Do you screen for glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy?
Yes. Our comprehensive exam includes eye pressure and corneal thickness measurement, OCT 3D retinal scans, visual field testing and dilated or wide-field retinal imaging — the combination used to detect glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy at their earliest, most treatable stages.
How long does a comprehensive eye examination take?
Most routine comprehensive exams take 30–45 minutes. More detailed assessments — such as dry eye management, OrthoK/contact lens fitting or glaucoma monitoring — can run 40–60 minutes, and diabetic eye checks need extra time allowed for dilation eye drops.
How often should I have a comprehensive eye examination?
Every 1–2 years for most adults with no known issues, and annually if you have diabetes, glaucoma, a family history of eye disease, or are over 65. Children benefit from regular checks too, especially where myopia or a family history of short-sightedness is present.
Is a comprehensive eye examination covered by Medicare?
Eyecare Concepts is a private billing practice, so most consultations are not bulk billed and a consultation fee applies. Most patients with a valid Medicare card are eligible for a Medicare rebate on a comprehensive eye examination, subject to Medicare's rebate rules on frequency and eligible item codes, and we claim that rebate for you on the spot straight after your appointment, with the funds paid electronically into your Medicare-linked bank account a few days later. Work-related and some specialised assessments (e.g. VicRoads/occupational vision checks) aren't covered by Medicare. See fees and charges for full details.
Do I need a referral to book a comprehensive eye examination?
No referral is needed — you can book directly with us, whether it's your first visit or you're coming from another practice. If you have been referred by your GP or another practitioner, just bring the referral letter along to your appointment.
What should I bring to my appointment?
Your current glasses or contact lens details, any previous eye reports, a medication list and GP/specialist information, your Medicare card and private health insurance details, and a referral letter if you have one.
Why choose Eyecare Concepts for an advanced eye examination in Melbourne's inner east?
We're based in Kew East and see patients from across Hawthorn, Camberwell, Balwyn and Box Hill who want expert-level diagnostics in one visit — OCT, Optos ultra-widefield imaging, corneal topography and more — backed by clinicians experienced in managing complex and progressive eye conditions, not just routine checks.
