Change Your Eye Colour, Fitted Properly

Coloured contact lenses are a genuinely fun way to change your look, but they're still a medical device sitting on your eye. We fit them properly, whether you need vision correction or not, so the fun part doesn't come with unnecessary risk.

A Cosmetic Choice That's Still A Medical Device

It's easy to think of coloured contact lenses as an accessory, closer to make-up than to a prescription lens. In reality, any lens sitting directly on the eye, tinted or not, needs to fit the specific curve and size of your eye properly to be comfortable and safe. A lens that's the wrong base curve can cause discomfort, poor movement, or in more serious cases, corneal irritation, regardless of how good the colour looks in the mirror.

That's why we treat a coloured lens fitting the same way we treat any contact lens fitting: we measure your eye, check the lens moves and sits correctly, and make sure you know the wear schedule and care routine before you leave.

Enhancement Tints
A translucent tint that intensifies your natural eye colour rather than replacing it, a subtler option for lighter eyes.
Opaque Colour Change
A fully opaque tint that changes eye colour completely, effective even over darker natural eye colours.
Enlarging Ring Designs
A defined outer ring that makes the eye appear larger and more defined, popular for a softer, doll-like look.
Prescription Or Plano
Full vision correction built in, or a plano lens with no correcting power at all, purely for the colour effect.

Common Questions

Coloured Lens Questions We're Asked Often

Do I need a prescription to wear coloured contact lenses?
Not necessarily for the lens power itself, plano (non-prescription) coloured lenses are available for wearers with no correction need. But every coloured contact lens, prescription or not, still needs to be properly fitted to the size and shape of your eye, which is why we always recommend a fitting rather than buying them without one.
Are coloured contact lenses safe?
Fitted and cared for correctly, yes. We only stock lenses that are TGA approved for sale in Australia. The main risks come from buying lenses online without a fitting, wearing them longer than recommended, or not cleaning them properly, not from coloured lenses as a category.
Can I get coloured lenses if I already wear contacts for astigmatism or a strong prescription?
In many cases yes. Depending on the design, we can match colour options to toric or higher-power prescriptions, though the exact range depends on the brand. We'll talk through what's available for your prescription at your fitting.
How long can I wear coloured lenses before replacing them?
That depends on the specific design, most cosmetic lenses are either daily disposables or replaced within a set period after opening, generally up to 90 days. We'll confirm the exact replacement schedule for whichever lens you choose.
Can I buy coloured contact lenses online or from a costume shop?
We'd strongly advise against it. Coloured contact lenses sold without a fitting, often through costume shops or overseas websites, aren't matched to your individual eye shape or checked for a safe fit, and have been linked to a disproportionate number of serious eye infections and corneal injuries. A proper fitting, even for a purely cosmetic lens, takes the same care as any other contact lens fit.
How much does a coloured contact lens fitting cost?
The fitting itself is priced similarly to a standard contact lens fitting, with the ongoing cost depending on which coloured lens design and replacement schedule you choose. We'll give you an exact figure, including lens costs, once we know which design suits your eyes and prescription.
Will coloured contacts look natural or obviously fake?
That depends heavily on the design and how well it's matched to your natural eye colour and iris size. Better-made enhancement and opaque tint lenses use layered patterns designed to look convincing in normal light, while cheaper, poorly fitted lenses tend to look flat or obviously artificial. We can show you samples against your own eye colour before you commit.
Can I wear coloured contacts every day, or just occasionally?
Both are fine as long as the lens is genuinely fitted to your eyes and you follow the recommended wearing schedule and hygiene routine. Some patients wear them daily as their regular vision correction, others keep a daily disposable design for occasional use, we'll set expectations for your intended wear pattern at your fitting.
Do coloured contact lenses need the same eye check-ups as regular contacts?
Yes, and arguably more so. Cosmetic lenses still sit directly on the eye and carry the same risks around fit, oxygen supply and hygiene as any other contact lens, so we recommend the same regular contact lens reviews regardless of whether the lens is corrective, cosmetic, or both.
Where can I get properly fitted coloured contact lenses in Melbourne?
We fit coloured and cosmetic contact lenses at our Kew East practice, assessing your eye shape, tear film and prescription needs before recommending a design, the same thorough process we use for any contact lens fitting. We see patients from across Melbourne's inner east and further afield for cosmetic lens fittings.
