Contact Lenses Overview

Not The Contact Lenses You Remember

Contact lens technology has moved a long way past "you're not a candidate." Astigmatism, needing reading correction, dry eyes, a keratoconic cornea or a child's progressing myopia used to rule contact lenses out for a lot of people. Most of those cases now have a genuine option, sometimes several. This page is a guide to what's available, so you can see the full picture before narrowing down to what actually suits your eyes.

Every Prescription, Covered

Whatever Your Eyes Need To Correct

A comprehensive contact lens assessment looks at your prescription, your eye health and how you actually live, then works out which of the designs below fits. Nearly every prescription has a starting point.

Short-Sightedness

Myopia, including designs that correct vision and slow progression in children.

Long-Sightedness

Hyperopia, fitted across daily, fortnightly and monthly designs.

Astigmatism

Toric lenses correcting two powers at once, precise to the axis.

Reading Vision

Multifocal designs for near, intermediate and distance in one lens.

Dry Eyes

Water-gradient and moisture-focused designs for eyes that dry out.

Irregular Corneas

Rigid, hybrid and scleral designs for keratoconus and complex eyes.

Colour Change

Prescription and non-prescription cosmetic lenses, TGA approved.

Complex Prescriptions

Made-to-measure Mark'ennovy lenses for ranges standard stock misses.

Contacts vs Glasses

What Contact Lenses Give You That Glasses Can't

Glasses aren't going anywhere, and plenty of people happily wear both depending on the day. But contact lenses solve a specific set of problems that frames simply can't.

Full, Uninterrupted Field Of Vision

No frame edges, no peripheral blur, no distortion at the corners of the lens. You see exactly what your eyes can see.

Freedom To Move

Sport, swimming, running in the rain, a fogged-up mask: none of it touches your vision when there's nothing sitting on your face.

Nothing Between You And Your Face

Wear sunglasses without your prescription doubled up. No slipping down your nose, no reflections in photos or on camera.

Designs That Actively Slow Myopia

Certain daily lenses correct a child's vision and slow the rate their short-sightedness progresses, at the same time.

No Fogging, Rain Spots Or Glare

Stepping from cold into warm, working over steam, driving into low sun: lenses on your eyes don't fog, spot or catch the glare glasses do.

Change How You Look, Or Don't

Some people love their glasses as part of their look. Others would rather no one could tell. Contact lenses make that a genuine choice either way.

Two Ways To Wear

Daytime Lenses, Or Worn While You Sleep

Almost every lens on this page is worn during waking hours and taken out before bed. OrthoK is the exception, and it's worth understanding why it's such a different proposition.

Worn During The Day

Daytime Contact Lenses

  • Put in each morning, taken out before bed
  • Daily, fortnightly or monthly replacement
  • Soft, toric, multifocal or myopia control designs
  • Vision depends on the lens being in your eye

Worn Overnight, While Asleep

OrthoK

  • Put in at bedtime, taken out on waking
  • Custom rigid lens, gently reshapes the cornea overnight
  • Nothing worn at all during the day

What We Consider Before Recommending A Lens

There isn't one "best" contact lens, only the best lens for your eyes, your prescription and how you live. A contact lens assessment works through the same four things every time.

Your Prescription
Short or long sighted, astigmatism, presbyopia, or a combination, this narrows down which lens families will even work.
Your Eye Health
Corneal shape, tear film and any existing conditions guide whether soft, rigid or hybrid designs fit best and safely.
Your Lifestyle
Sport, screen time, how consistently you'd manage a cleaning routine, all shape which replacement schedule genuinely suits.
Day Or Night Wear
Whether wearing something in your eyes all day suits you, or you'd rather it was all done while you slept, changes the recommendation.

Who Can Wear Contact Lenses?

Kids, Adults, Nearly Every Prescription

Contact lenses aren't just for young adults with straightforward prescriptions. We fit them across every stage of life.

Ages 8+

Kids & Teens

Children as young as eight are commonly fitted successfully, often with a myopia management lens that corrects vision and slows progression together. Discipline around handling and hygiene matters more than age alone.

Myopia Management Lenses
Adults

Working Adults

Daily and monthly soft lenses, toric designs for astigmatism, or OrthoK for anyone who'd rather deal with lenses only overnight and stay wear-free during the day.

What Is OrthoK?
40s & Beyond

Presbyopia & Complex Eyes

Multifocal lenses handle the reading vision most people need from their 40s. Complex or irregular corneas move to a rigid, hybrid or scleral design instead of being ruled out.

Common Questions

Contact Lens Questions We're Asked Often

Can I wear contact lenses if I have astigmatism, need reading correction, or a high prescription?
Almost always, yes. Toric contact lenses correct astigmatism, multifocal designs correct near and distance vision in one lens, and custom Mark'ennovy lenses are made to measure for prescriptions or corneal shapes standard ranges don't cover. See Lenses For Astigmatism, Multifocal Contact Lenses and Mark'ennovy Lenses for the detail on each.
Are contact lenses safe for children?
Yes, and for many children with progressing short-sightedness, a contact lens is actually the treatment we recommend. Daily disposable designs such as MiSight 1 Day, MyDay MiSight 1 Day and ACUVUE Abiliti 1-Day correct vision and slow myopia progression at the same time, and children as young as eight are commonly fitted successfully under our supervision. See Myopia Management Contact Lenses.
What's the difference between everyday contact lenses and OrthoK?
Everyday contact lenses are worn during waking hours and removed before bed. OrthoK works the opposite way: custom rigid lenses are worn overnight while you sleep, gently and temporarily reshaping the cornea, then removed each morning. Vision stays clear all day with nothing worn at all, which is why families juggling sport, swimming or screen time so often choose it. See What Is OrthoK?
Can I wear contact lenses if I have dry eyes?
Often, yes, with the right lens design. Water-gradient and moisture-focused daily lenses such as Dailies Total1 and ACUVUE Oasys Max 1-Day are built specifically for eyes that dry out by the end of the day, and where soft lenses still aren't comfortable, OrthoK or scleral lenses avoid the issue altogether by not sitting directly on a dry ocular surface during the day. See Contact Lenses For Dry Eyes.
What if my eyes are irregularly shaped, such as with keratoconus?
Standard soft lenses often can't correct an irregular corneal surface properly, but rigid, hybrid and scleral lens designs can. We fit custom RGP lenses, SynergEyes hybrid lenses with a rigid centre and soft outer skirt, and scleral lenses that vault entirely over the cornea. See Hard Contact Lenses, SynergEyes Hybrid Lenses and Scleral Lenses.
How much do contact lenses cost?
It depends on the lens design and replacement schedule: daily disposables, fortnightly or monthly lenses, toric, multifocal and custom lenses are all priced differently. We'll give you an exact figure once we know your prescription and preferred wearing schedule at your assessment. General guidance is on our Fees & Charges page.
Can contact lenses help slow my child's myopia progression?
Yes. Certain daily disposable lens designs are built to correct vision and slow the rate short-sightedness progresses, backed by good clinical evidence. It's one of several myopia control options we discuss alongside OrthoK and myopia control glasses, and the right choice depends on your child's age, prescription and lifestyle. See Myopia Management Contact Lenses and Slowing Down Myopia.
Is OrthoK safe to wear overnight?
Yes. OrthoK has decades of published evidence behind it and is fitted and monitored closely, with regular reviews to check the cornea is responding as expected. It's a well-established treatment, and one we have particular experience fitting. See our OrthoK FAQ for more.
How do I know which contact lens is right for me?
That's exactly what a contact lens assessment is for. We look at your prescription, eye health, tear film, lifestyle and what you'd rather deal with day-to-day or not at all, then talk you through the designs that genuinely suit, rather than the one lens we happen to stock. Book a contact lens assessment online and we'll work through it together.
Where can I get fitted for contact lenses in Melbourne?
We fit contact lenses at our Kew East practice, serving families across Melbourne's inner east including Hawthorn, Camberwell, Balwyn, Box Hill and the surrounding suburbs. A good number of our patients travel from further afield specifically for fittings other practices have found too complex, including high astigmatism, keratoconus, scleral lenses and myopia management for children. See our Contact Us page for exact directions, or book a contact lens assessment online to get started.
