Clear Vision, Without A Trace

OrthoK reshapes your cornea while you sleep, so you wake up seeing clearly with nothing worn all day, and for progressing children, it slows myopia at the same time.

What Is OrthoK?

Orthokeratology, OrthoK for short, uses a custom-designed, rigid, gas-permeable lens worn overnight to gently and temporarily reshape the front surface of the eye, the cornea. That reshaping refocuses light the same way glasses or daytime contact lenses do, so when the lenses come out in the morning, vision stays clear throughout the day.

It's a genuinely different way to correct short-sightedness: nothing is worn during waking hours at all. For children and teenagers whose myopia is still progressing, it does something else too, slowing how much the eye keeps elongating, which we cover in detail on our Myopia Control page.

How It Actually Works

Each lens is custom-designed from a detailed 3D map of your cornea, called corneal topography, rather than picked off a shelf. Its unique curve profile applies gentle, precisely calculated pressure to specific zones of the cornea overnight, flattening the central cornea just enough to correct myopia.

The change is temporary by design, held in place by the fluid layer under the lens and the eyelid's normal pressure while you sleep. Wear the lenses consistently overnight and the correction holds through the day; stop wearing them and the cornea gradually drifts back to its original shape over several days, which is exactly what makes OrthoK fully reversible.

Who Benefits Most

Who OrthoK Suits

OrthoK works well across a genuinely broad range of ages and lifestyles.

Progressing Children & Teens

One of the best-evidenced myopia control treatments, slowing progression while correcting vision, with nothing worn at school or sport.

Swimmers & Water Sports

No daytime lenses or glasses to fog up, fall out, or be exposed to pool and open water, a common frustration with standard contact lenses.

Dusty Or Dry Work Environments

Tradies, farmers and anyone in dusty, windy or air-conditioned environments that make daytime contact lens wear uncomfortable.

Adults Wanting Glasses-Free Days

A non-surgical alternative to laser eye surgery for adults who'd rather not wear glasses or daytime contact lenses but aren't ready for, or don't want, surgery.

What Prescriptions Can Be Corrected?

OrthoK works well for low to moderate myopia, generally up to around -4.50D to -6.00D with limited astigmatism. Higher prescriptions can still respond well in the right candidate, though predictability varies more, which is why we assess every case individually with corneal topography before recommending it.

The Evidence For Myopia Control

OrthoK is one of the most researched myopia control treatments available. Clinical trials, including studies tracking axial length rather than prescription alone, have consistently shown OrthoK slows eye elongation by around 50% or more compared with standard glasses or contact lens wear, with the greatest benefit typically seen in the first year of treatment.

Response does vary between individuals, and OrthoK isn't guaranteed to stop progression entirely for every child, but a meaningful slowing translates directly into lower lifetime risk of the eye health conditions covered on our Myopia-Related Eye Diseases page. Our Evidence-Based Treatment page explains how we weigh this alongside the other myopia control options we offer.

Common Questions

OrthoK: FAQs

See our full OrthoK FAQ page for more detail.

What is OrthoK?
OrthoK, short for orthokeratology, uses custom-designed rigid lenses worn overnight to gently reshape the front surface of the eye. By morning, the cornea has taken on a new, temporary shape that corrects your prescription, so you see clearly all day with nothing worn, no glasses and no daytime contact lenses.
Is the corneal reshaping permanent?
No, and that's by design. The effect is temporary and fully reversible. Skip a night or two of lens wear and the cornea will gradually drift back toward its original shape over several days.
Does OrthoK hurt?
Most people feel a mild lens awareness for the first few nights, similar to how any new contact lens feels at first, which settles quickly. It shouldn't be painful. Comfort typically improves substantially within the first week of consistent wear.
What prescriptions can OrthoK correct?
OrthoK works well for low to moderate myopia, generally up to around -4.50D to -6.00D with limited astigmatism, and can still be effective for higher prescriptions in the right candidate, though results and predictability vary. We assess this individually with corneal topography.
Does OrthoK also slow myopia progression in children?
Yes. Alongside correcting vision, OrthoK is one of the best-evidenced myopia control treatments, with clinical trials showing it typically slows axial elongation by around 50% compared with standard correction alone. See our Myopia Control Treatments page for the full comparison.
Is OrthoK safe?
Yes, when properly fitted, worn and cared for. Its overall risk profile is comparable to daytime soft contact lens wear. Following hygiene guidance, never rinsing lenses in tap water, and attending scheduled reviews are what keep that risk low.
Who is OrthoK suitable for?
A wide range of people: children and teenagers wanting myopia control, adults who prefer glasses-free days without daytime contact lenses or refractive surgery, and anyone whose lifestyle, swimming, dusty environments, sport, doesn't suit daytime lens wear well.
Can adults use OrthoK, or is it just for children?
Adults use OrthoK too, most often for the convenience of glasses-free days without daytime contact lenses or the commitment of laser surgery. Myopia control is generally the priority reason for children; correction convenience is usually the priority for adults.
What happens if I forget to wear my OrthoK lenses one night?
Vision usually stays reasonably clear the next day, gradually softening over a day or two if lenses aren't worn again. An occasional missed night isn't usually a problem, but consistent nightly wear gives the most reliable, predictable vision.
Can OrthoK be combined with atropine eye drops?
Yes. Combining OrthoK with low-dose atropine is a genuine option for children who need additional myopia control beyond OrthoK alone, and it's an area of growing evidence. We discuss this if progression continues despite OrthoK alone.
