Why It Matters

Technology You Can See The Difference In

Every instrument in our clinic exists for one reason — to help us find eye conditions earlier, understand them more precisely, and look after your eyes better over the years to come. Here's how our technology supports every stage of your care.

1

Find Early Signs

Many eye conditions have no symptoms in their earliest, most treatable stages. Our imaging can pick up microscopic changes long before you'd ever notice something was wrong.

2

Diagnose With Precision

Detailed, objective measurements take the guesswork out of diagnosis, so any issue we find is backed by clear evidence, not just an impression.

3

Monitor & Document

Every scan is saved to your file as a precise, dated record, so at your next visit we can compare directly and catch even the smallest change over time.

4

Manage Progression

Where treatment is needed, our technology lets us track how well it's working, so your management plan can be adjusted with confidence.

Where Every Exam Starts

Comprehensive Baseline Testing

Every visit begins with a set of fast, precise baseline measurements — the foundation everything else is built on.

All-In-One Baseline Scan
Topcon TRK-2P

In under a minute, this single instrument estimates your glasses prescription, maps your cornea's curvature, checks your eye pressure for early glaucoma risk, and measures your corneal thickness — all without ever touching your eye.

Precision Lensmeter
Topcon Solos

Reads the exact prescription ground into your current glasses in seconds, so we can compare it accurately against your new results and confirm any new lenses were made correctly.

Anterior Eye Photography
Topcon Cameras

High-resolution photographs of the front of your eye — eyelids, cornea, conjunctiva — become part of your permanent record, so we can spot even subtle changes at your next visit.

Common Questions

Eye Care Technology FAQs

Is advanced eye imaging painful or uncomfortable?
No. Almost every scan we use — OCT, corneal topography, retinal photography, the Pentacam — is non-contact and painless, and most take only a few seconds. You'll simply rest your chin on a support and look at a target light while the instrument does the work; there's no puff of air with our main baseline scanner and nothing touches your eye. A small number of tests, such as applying numbing drops for certain pressure checks, involve brief eye drops, and we'll always explain what to expect before we start.
Do I have to pay extra for these scans, or are they included in my eye test?
It depends on the package you book. Our Advanced Eye Care and Ultimate Eye Health+ consultations already include OCT 3D scanning and/or ultra-widefield retinal imaging as standard, on top of the baseline testing everyone receives. Standard 45° retinal photography is included in every eye test. See our fees and charges page for exact pricing and current Medicare rebate amounts, or ask our team when you book — we're upfront about cost with no surprises on the day.
What is OCT and why does it matter so much for my eye health?
OCT (optical coherence tomography) is a scan that takes a cross-sectional, high-resolution image of the individual layers of your retina and optic nerve, similar in principle to an ultrasound but using light instead of sound. It lets us see beneath the surface of the retina, not just photograph it, which is what makes it so powerful for detecting glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy at a microscopic level, often years before symptoms or vision loss would otherwise alert you to a problem.
Can this technology find eye disease before I notice any symptoms?
Yes, and this is exactly why we've invested so heavily in it. Conditions like glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and keratoconus typically cause no noticeable symptoms in their earliest, most treatable stages — by the time you'd notice a change in your vision, some damage may already be permanent. Our OCT, topography and widefield retinal imaging are designed to pick up microscopic structural changes well before that point, giving you and your optometrist the best chance to act early.
How is a comprehensive eye test at Eyecare Concepts different from a basic eye test elsewhere?
A basic eye test at many practices checks your prescription and has a quick look at the back of your eye with a handheld light. Our exams go considerably further, drawing on 16 diagnostic technologies in-house — including 3D OCT retinal scanning, 200° ultra-widefield imaging, corneal topography and detailed visual field testing — to build an objective, measured picture of your eye health rather than a quick visual impression. We're one of the most technologically advanced clinics in Melbourne's inner east, and every scan is saved to your file so we can compare precisely at your next visit. Read more about our approach on our Advanced Eye Care page.
How often do these scans need to be repeated?
It depends on your age, risk factors and any condition being monitored. A healthy adult with no risk factors might have baseline imaging updated at each annual eye test, simply to build a reliable long-term record. If you're being monitored for something specific — such as glaucoma risk, macular changes, diabetic eye disease or myopia progression in a child — we'll recommend a review interval tailored to your situation, sometimes every 6 months, so we can track even small changes over time with confidence.
Will I get a Medicare rebate for a technology-assisted eye test?
Eligible patients receive a Medicare rebate towards the consultation component of their eye test, typically $34.00 or $67.85 depending on your eligibility and eye condition. Because our OCT and other imaging is bundled into the consultation fee for most packages rather than billed separately, this rebate still applies. Full current pricing and rebate details are set out on our fees and charges page, and our team can talk you through your specific rebate entitlement before you book.
Does every patient get every scan, or is it tailored to me?
Every patient receives baseline testing at each visit, but which additional scans we recommend depends on your age, symptoms, family history and risk factors. A child being monitored for myopia will have axial length measured with our Myopia Master; someone with a family history of glaucoma is likely to have OCT optic nerve imaging and visual field testing; a contact lens wearer considering OrthoK will have detailed corneal topography. Your optometrist tailors the technology used to what's clinically relevant for your eyes.
How long does a full technology work-up add to my appointment?
Most of our scans are fast — our all-in-one baseline instrument alone estimates your prescription, corneal curvature, eye pressure and corneal thickness in under a minute. A standard comprehensive eye test with baseline imaging typically runs 30 minutes, while our Ultimate Eye Health+ consultation, which adds ultra-widefield retinal scanning and OCT, runs around 45 minutes. We build the extra time into your booking, so the technology never feels rushed or bolted on.
Will I actually get to see and understand my own scan results?
Yes. We explain your results the same day, on the same screen, so you can see exactly what your optometrist is looking at — whether that's the layers of your retina on an OCT scan or the 3D map of your cornea. We believe transparency is part of good eye care, and if a scan raises anything worth monitoring or referring on, we'll walk you through what it means and what happens next before you leave. We serve patients across Kew East and Melbourne's inner east, including Hawthorn, Camberwell, Balwyn and Box Hill.
