Who Hoya Are

Hoya is a Japanese optical technology company and one of the largest lens manufacturers in the world, with a history spanning decades of precision glass and lens manufacturing. Their vision care division produces everything from everyday single vision lenses through to some of the most researched myopia control lens designs available.

What stands out clinically is the depth of research behind their newer lens technologies, particularly MiYOSMART, which now has some of the longest published follow-up data of any myopia control spectacle lens on the market.

Our Reasoning

Why We Recommend Hoya

Clinical reasoning, not brand loyalty, is behind every recommendation we make.

Depth Of Evidence

MiYOSMART's clinical trials and follow-up studies are among the most extensive of any myopia control spectacle lens, which matters when we're recommending something for a growing child's eyes.

Manufacturing Precision

Consistent surfacing and lens quality translate directly into fewer remakes and more predictable comfort once your glasses are dispensed.

Genuine Personalisation

iD MyStyle's individual measurements produce a lens built around how you actually see, not an average wearer's habits.

Common Questions

Hoya Lens Questions We're Asked Often

Is Hoya a good lens brand?
Hoya is one of the world's largest optical lens manufacturers, with a long history in Japanese precision optics. We use Hoya lenses regularly, particularly for myopia control and personalised progressive designs, because the underlying technology and manufacturing quality are consistently strong.
What is MiYOSMART and is it different from other myopia control lenses?
MiYOSMART uses Hoya's D.I.M.S. (Defocus Incorporated Multiple Segments) technology, a ring of hundreds of small segments surrounding a clear central zone that corrects vision normally while creating a myopic defocus signal to slow eye growth. It's supported by long-term clinical follow-up, including data out to eight years, and is one of a small number of myopia control lens designs we're confident recommending. See our dedicated MiYOSMART page for the full detail.
What's the difference between iD MyStyle and a standard progressive lens?
A standard progressive lens design is the same for everyone at a given power. iD MyStyle is calculated around your individual frame measurements, prescription and how you hold your head and eyes when reading, driving or working, which generally means wider, more usable zones of clear vision and a shorter adjustment period.
Does Hoya make lenses for children who don't need myopia control?
Yes. Hoya's standard single vision and lens coating range suits any prescription, myopia control is simply one part of a much broader lens range that also covers everyday glasses for adults and children.
How much do Hoya lenses cost?
Pricing depends on the lens design and coatings you choose: a single vision Hoya lens is priced similarly to other premium single vision options, while personalised designs like iD MyStyle and MiYOSMART sit higher because of the technology and manufacturing involved. We give you an exact, itemised quote at your consultation once we know your prescription and frame, rather than a generic figure that may not reflect your case.
Where can I get Hoya MiYOSMART lenses fitted in Melbourne?
We fit MiYOSMART at our Kew East practice, and it's one of the myopia control lens designs we recommend most often given its published long-term data. Because correct fitting relies on accurate frame measurements and ongoing monitoring, we see families from across Melbourne's inner east, as well as further afield, for MiYOSMART fittings and reviews.
Is Hoya better than Zeiss or Essilor?
There isn't a single best lens brand. Hoya, Zeiss and Essilor are all major manufacturers with strong optical engineering, and each has particular designs we reach for depending on the patient. We stock all three because different lens technologies suit different prescriptions, frames and visual needs, and we recommend whichever brand and design genuinely fits your situation rather than defaulting to one supplier.
Do I need a new eye test to get Hoya lenses?
Generally yes. We need a current, valid prescription and accurate frame measurements before ordering any Hoya lens, particularly personalised designs like iD MyStyle where centration and fitting height affect the final result. If your last eye test was more than 12 months ago, or your prescription has changed, we'll need to update it first.
How long do Hoya lenses take to make?
Most standard Hoya lenses are ready within about one to two weeks, though personalised designs like iD MyStyle or higher-index materials can take a little longer as they're manufactured to more specific individual measurements. We'll confirm an expected timeframe when you order.
Can Hoya lenses go into any frame?
In most cases, yes. Hoya lenses can be fitted into the vast majority of frame shapes and materials, including frames you already own if they're in good condition. Some higher-wrap or rimless frames need particular lens designs to avoid distortion, which we'll flag during your consultation.
