A carefully staged process, from corneal mapping to your first confident night of overnight wear, designed to get you to clear, comfortable vision as smoothly as possible.
Because every OrthoK lens is custom-designed for your individual cornea, fitting takes more time and more visits than picking up a standard prescription. That's a genuine investment of time upfront, but it's what makes the difference between an average result and consistently clear, comfortable vision.
Here's exactly what to expect, step by step, from your first consultation through to a settled, routine wearing schedule.
A comprehensive eye test, discussion of your goals and lifestyle, and detailed corneal topography to map your eye's precise shape, the foundation every lens design is built from.
Using your topography data, we design lenses specific to your corneal shape and prescription, then order them from the lens laboratory best suited to your case.
We check the fit on the eye, then take the time needed for you, or your child, to feel genuinely confident inserting, removing and caring for the lenses before the first night home.
Vision typically improves progressively over the first week of consistent wear. We schedule short reviews in this period to check how the cornea is responding and fine-tune the fit if needed.
Most people reach comfortable, stable vision within one to two weeks. If adjustments are needed, this is when we make them, sometimes involving a lens remake to refine the fit further.
Once settled, reviews move to a routine schedule, generally every six to twelve months for adults, more frequently for progressing children, including axial length monitoring where OrthoK is being used for myopia control.
Even with an experienced fitter, some corneas respond in ways that call for an adjusted lens design partway through the program. This is a routine, expected part of achieving the best possible outcome, not a sign that anything has gone wrong.
Most new wearers notice a mild lens awareness for the first few nights, similar to any new contact lens, which settles quickly as the eyes adapt to the lens material. It shouldn't be painful; genuine discomfort is something we want to know about straight away.
Vision generally improves night by night rather than being perfect from the very first morning. Many people are pleasantly surprised by a meaningful improvement after just one night, with clarity continuing to sharpen and stabilise over the following several days as the cornea settles into its new, temporary shape.
