What Are These Lenses?

Ordinary Glasses, Extraordinary Optics

From across the room, myopia control glasses look like any other pair of children's spectacles. Look closely at the lens itself, though, and you'll find microscopic optical segments or lenslets surrounding a clear central zone, engineering that's changed what everyday glasses can do for a progressing child.

The central zone corrects distance vision exactly as a normal lens would. The surrounding treatment zone does something entirely different: it creates a second, deliberately out-of-focus image that falls just in front of the retina, a signal that appears to slow the eye's drive to keep growing longer.

We Help You Choose

We compare prescription range, frame fit and visual comfort for your child at a myopia assessment.

How It Works

Slowing Eye Growth, Not Just Blurring Vision

All five of our glasses options share the same underlying principle, delivered through different lens engineering.

Peripheral Defocus Lens Diagram — Clear Zone & Treatment Zone
1

A clear central zone corrects everyday vision

The middle of the lens works just like a standard single-vision lens, giving your child sharp, clear eyesight for reading, the whiteboard and everyday life.

2

A surrounding treatment zone creates defocus

Segments, rings or cylindrical lenslets across the lens periphery create continuous myopic defocus, invisible from typical viewing distance.

3

The signal works throughout waking hours

Consistent full-time wear delivers the defocus signal continuously, helping to reduce the axial elongation that drives myopia progression.

In plain terms: a normal lens only helps your child see clearly today. Myopia control glasses aim to also change the trajectory of their eyesight over time.

Our Clinic

How Eyecare Concepts Fits Myopia Control Glasses

We help every family compare our five glasses options and manage fitting through to ongoing monitoring.

Step 1

Comprehensive assessment

We assess your child's progressing myopia, or preventive candidacy, and establish a baseline axial length measurement.

Step 2

Lens selection & precision fitting

We compare our five lens options for your child's needs, then fit each lens for optimal alignment.

Step 3

Ongoing monitoring

We review progress at regular intervals, tracking axial length and prescription change.

Myopia control glasses may be a great fit if your child:

  • Has diagnosed progressing myopia
  • Prefers glasses to contacts or OrthoK
  • Shows early signs of myopia risk
  • Isn't responding well to current treatment

Common Questions

Myopia Control Glasses: FAQs

How do myopia control glasses work?
The central part of the lens corrects distance vision normally. Surrounding it, hundreds of tiny lens segments or rings create a second, out-of-focus image slightly in front of the retina at all times, a signal that appears to slow the eye's tendency to keep elongating, while central vision stays clear and undisturbed.
Which myopia control glasses lenses do you offer?
Five options: MiyoSMART and the newer MiyoSMART iQ from Hoya, Stellest and the newer Stellest 2.0 from Essilor, and ZEISS MyoCare. Each has its own dedicated page, and we help you choose based on prescription, frame fit and personal preference.
Are myopia control glasses as effective as OrthoK or contact lenses?
Broadly, yes. Clinical trials of these lenses have each shown around 50 to 60% reduction in axial elongation compared with standard single-vision lenses, comparable to the top-tier results seen with OrthoK and MiSight contact lenses.
Can myopia control glasses be used before a child is even myopic?
Yes, in select cases. MiyoSMART iQ is now available in plus powers, and Stellest 2.0 can be fitted in plano, making both usable as a preventive option in at-risk, pre-myopic children with a depleting hyperopic reserve. Our Preventing Myopia page covers this in more detail.
Do myopia control glasses look any different to normal glasses?
Not obviously. The optical segments or lenslets are subtle and only visible on close inspection of the lens surface. From a normal viewing distance, they look like ordinary prescription glasses.
Does my child need to wear them all the time for them to work?
Consistent wear during waking hours gives the best result, since the myopia control effect depends on the eye continuously receiving the defocus signal. Trial data generally reflects children wearing the lenses as their everyday glasses.
How do myopia control glasses compare to OrthoK or contact lenses for my child?
All are genuine options with strong evidence. Glasses are the simplest to manage day to day, no lens handling or overnight routine, which suits some children better, while OrthoK and contact lenses suit others whose lifestyle or sport doesn't favour full-time glasses wear. Our Myopia Control Treatments page compares all five options.
Do myopia control glasses cost more than standard lenses?
Yes, they typically cost more than standard single-vision lenses, reflecting the specialised optical technology involved. We discuss pricing clearly before ordering, alongside how the cost compares with our other myopia control options.
Can myopia control lenses be fitted into any frame?
Most frames work well, though the lens design needs enough usable width and height to fit the full optical zone. We'll check frame suitability at your appointment and can help choose a frame if needed.
How do I choose between MiyoSMART, Stellest and ZEISS MyoCare?
All three sit in a broadly similar top evidence tier, using different optical engineering to reach a similar clinical effect. We talk through prescription range, frame fit and visual comfort at your child's myopia assessment to find the best fit.
