Good lens care is what keeps OrthoK comfortable, effective and safe, night after night. Here's exactly how to insert, remove, clean and store your lenses properly.

Why Lens Care Matters As Much As The Fit

An OrthoK lens that's beautifully fitted still relies on genuinely careful daily care to stay safe and effective. Because these lenses sit on the eye overnight, every night, the routine you build around handling, cleaning and storing them is just as important to your results as the lens design itself.

None of this is complicated once it becomes habit, but it does need to be done properly and consistently. This page walks through exactly what we teach every patient during their fitting program, so you always have it to refer back to.

Daily Routine

Inserting & Removing Your Lenses

1

Wash & Dry Your Hands Thoroughly

Use a fragrance-free, lotion-free soap and dry your hands on a clean, lint-free towel before touching your lenses or eyes, every single time.

2

Check & Rinse The Lens

Inspect the lens for any damage or debris, and rinse it with sterile saline before inserting, especially important if it's been soaking in a peroxide cleaning system.

3

Insert With A Lubricating Drop

A drop of lubricant on the lens helps it glide onto the eye comfortably. We'll show you the exact technique, using a mirror and steady eyelid support, at your fitting visits.

4

Remove Gently Each Morning

Using the technique we teach you, or a suction-cup lens remover if needed, take the lens out gently after waking. If it feels stuck, add a lubricating drop and wait before trying again, never force it.

Daily Cleaning & Storage

We recommend a hydrogen peroxide cleaning system, such as AOSept Plus, as our first-choice lens care solution, since it offers the highest level of disinfection of any current lens care system. After removing your lenses each morning, they go straight into fresh peroxide solution in their case, where they clean and fully neutralise over a minimum of six hours, ready for a saline rinse and insertion again that night.

Your case matters too. Rinse it with sterile solution, never tap water, and let it air dry between uses, and replace the case entirely every one to three months, even if it still looks clean.

Monthly Care

The Monthly Deep Clean

Even with careful daily cleaning, protein and lipid deposits can gradually build up on the lens surface over several weeks.

Why We Recommend A Protein Remover

A monthly intensive clean using a dedicated protein remover, such as Menicon Progent, clears this residue thoroughly, helping keep your lens surface smooth, comfortable and optically clear. We'll show you exactly how and when to use it, and it takes only a little extra time added to your normal routine.

Critical Safety Rule

Never Let Tap Water Touch Your Lenses

This is the single most important rule in OrthoK lens care.

Why This Matters So Much

Tap water, and even some bottled or filtered water, can carry microorganisms capable of causing severe, sight-threatening eye infections in contact lens wearers, orthokeratology included. Never rinse your lenses or case in tap water, never store lenses in water, and never use saliva to wet a lens. Only use the sterile solutions we specifically recommend for every step of your routine.

Common Questions

Lens Care: FAQs

How do I clean my OrthoK lenses every day?
We recommend a hydrogen peroxide cleaning system, such as AOSept Plus, which offers the highest level of disinfection of any lens care system currently available. The lens sits in the peroxide solution overnight in its case, where it's cleaned and fully neutralised, ready for gentle rinsing and insertion the next night.
Can I use tap water on my OrthoK lenses or case?
No, never. Tap water, and even some bottled or filtered water, can carry organisms that cause severe, sight-threatening eye infections in contact lens wearers. Only use the specific sterile solutions we recommend, for both the lenses and rinsing the case.
Why do I need a monthly deep clean if I'm cleaning daily?
Daily cleaning removes most everyday debris, but protein and lipid deposits can still build up gradually on the lens surface over weeks. A monthly deep clean with a protein remover, such as Menicon Progent, clears this residue, keeping the lens surface smooth, comfortable and optically clear.
What if I can't get my lens out in the morning?
Don't force it. Add a lubricating drop and wait a minute or two to let it mobilise, then try again using the technique we teach you. If it still won't budge, a suction-cup lens remover, used exactly as shown, can help. Contact us if you're still stuck.
How often should I replace my lens case?
Every one to three months, even if it looks clean, since cases can harbour biofilm that isn't visible to the eye. We'll make sure you always have a fresh case on hand at your reviews.
My eye is red or uncomfortable after wearing my lenses. What should I do?
Remove the lenses and don't wear them again until we've assessed your eyes. Redness, pain or unusual discomfort should never be worked through; contact us promptly so we can check what's happening.
Can I share my OrthoK lens care solutions with a sibling who also wears OrthoK?
No. Each lens case, cleaning system and any personal items should stay strictly individual, even between siblings, to avoid cross-contamination and ensure each lens keeps its own dedicated case and routine.
Do I need to rinse my lenses with saline before inserting them?
Yes, a rinse with sterile saline before insertion removes any residual cleaning solution from the lens surface, which is important for comfort, particularly with a hydrogen peroxide system that must be fully neutralised first.
Is it normal for my hands to need extra care before handling lenses?
Yes. Washing hands thoroughly with a fragrance-free, lotion-free soap and drying them on a lint-free towel before every insertion and removal is one of the simplest and most important habits for keeping lenses, and your eyes, clean.
What if I lose or damage a lens while travelling?
Contact us as soon as possible; we can usually arrange a replacement based on your lens parameters already on file. In the meantime, wear your backup glasses rather than trying to make a damaged lens work.
